UNS N06686 / W.Nr. 2.4606 Seamless Pipe & Tube Overview

Explore the chemical composition, corrosion resistance, mechanical properties, and temperature characteristics of Inconel 686 seamless pipe & tube for optimal resistance, strength, and stability

Inconel 686 Seamless Pipe & Tube Material Properties Overview

Inconel 686 seamless pipe & tube is manufactured without longitudinal weld seams, providing a continuous structure, consistent wall thickness, and dependable performance throughout the pipe body. Alloy 686 is a single phase austenitic nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten alloy with tightly controlled iron, carbon, and silicon levels. Its high alloy content combines exceptional corrosion resistance with useful strength and fabrication capability. Arialloy seamless pipe & tube can be supplied in different outside diameters, wall thicknesses, lengths, and surface conditions to meet project specifications for pressure containing and corrosive fluid handling systems

Inconel 686 Seamless Pipe & Tube Corrosion Resistance

The corrosion resistance of Inconel 686 seamless pipe & tube is supported by its balanced nickel, chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten composition. Nickel and molybdenum provide strong resistance in reducing media, while chromium improves performance in oxidizing conditions. Molybdenum and tungsten also strengthen resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride containing solutions. The alloy performs well in sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, mixed acid environments, chlorinated seawater, and other aggressive process fluids. Its low carbon and iron contents help limit detrimental precipitation and preserve corrosion resistance throughout the seamless pipe structure.

Inconel 686 Seamless Pipe & Tube Mechanical Properties

Inconel 686 seamless pipe & tube combines high tensile strength with substantial ductility and impact toughness in the annealed condition. Its solid solution strengthened structure provides dependable resistance to pressure, mechanical loading, fatigue, and handling stresses without requiring precipitation hardening treatment. Cold working can further increase yield and tensile strength, although the alloy work hardens rapidly and may require intermediate annealing during extensive forming. The absence of a longitudinal weld also eliminates variations associated with weld metal and heat affected zones, supporting more uniform mechanical behavior around the pipe circumference and along its length.

Inconel 686 Seamless Pipe & Tube Temperature Characteristics

Inconel 686 seamless pipe & tube retains useful strength and structural stability across low and moderately elevated temperatures. Published tensile data show gradual strength reduction rather than abrupt loss as temperature increases to approximately 538°C. Its coefficient of thermal expansion remains controlled across the evaluated temperature range, supporting dimensional stability during heating and cooling cycles. For pressure containing construction, the referenced material bulletin lists allowable ASME design stresses for service up to 427°C and European approval up to 400°C.
