Inconel 601 Material Properties Overview

As a manufacturer and supplier in China, Arialloy supplies competitively priced inconel 601 products.

Inconel 601 (UNS N06601 / W.Nr. 2.4851) is an austenitic nickel alloy containing chromium, iron, and aluminum, combining exceptional oxidation resistance with useful mechanical strength. Its composition includes 58.0% to 63.0% nickel, 21.0% to 25.0% chromium, and 1.0% to 1.7% aluminum, with iron forming the balance. Nickel supports structural stability, while chromium promotes the formation of a protective surface oxide. Aluminum improves oxidation resistance and helps the oxide layer remain adherent during repeated heating and cooling. The alloy has a stable face centered cubic matrix and combines resistance to elevated temperature degradation with good ductility. Its properties depend on the product form, grain structure, and processing condition, which should be considered when specifying material requirements.

The alloy can be hot formed, cold worked, machined, and welded using suitable procedures. Cold deformation increases strength and hardness, while intermediate annealing may be needed to restore ductility during extensive forming. Welding consumables should be selected according to the required joint properties, particularly when maintaining oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures is important.

Inconel 601 has a density of approximately 8.11 g/cm³, providing a useful reference for calculating product weight from the specified dimensions.

Inconel 601 Corrosion Resistance

Inconel 601 resists oxidation and carburization through a protective surface oxide that limits further attack. Its chromium and aluminum content helps maintain this protection during repeated thermal exposure.

In aqueous environments, the alloy offers good resistance to nitric acid and sodium hydroxide solutions, with useful resistance to dilute phosphoric acid. Resistance decreases at higher phosphoric acid concentrations, and the alloy generally performs poorly in sulfuric, hydrochloric, and hydrofluoric acids. Corrosion behavior must therefore be evaluated against the actual chemical composition, concentration, and temperature.

Inconel 601 Mechanical Properties

In the solution annealed condition, representative room temperature data for inconel 601 show a tensile strength of approximately 620 MPa, a 0.2% proof strength of 270 MPa, and 30% elongation. Cold working increases strength and hardness, while reducing the ductility available for subsequent forming. Product form and heat treatment also influence measured properties.

These values describe a representative material condition and should not replace the acceptance requirements stated in the applicable product specification.

Inconel 601 Temperature Characteristics

Inconel 601 offers excellent oxidation resistance at temperatures approaching 1200°C in air, supported by an oxide layer that resists spalling during thermal cycling. This temperature indicates oxidation capability rather than a universal limit for sustained mechanical loading. Strength decreases as temperature rises, and resistance to creep depends on stress, exposure time, and material condition. Solution annealing establishes the grain structure needed for elevated temperature performance. Operating limits should therefore account for both surface oxidation and progressive deformation under load, together with the surrounding atmosphere.

Since an alloy is produced from various metallic raw materials, changes in those materials can directly affect its market price. Nickel, chromium, and aluminum are among the important metals influencing superalloy costs, and significant price movements in these metals are often reflected in alloy quotations.

Our factory carries out the inconel 601 melting process in-house. We have more than 30 vacuum smelting and electroslag remelting furnaces, covering four production capacities from 50 kg up to 5,000 kg. Because we can choose an appropriate furnace for each batch, we are able to offer smaller MOQs.

Certainly, we issue the inconel 601 MTR prior to shipment based on applicable industry standards. It provides the material standard, chemical analysis, mechanical test data, dimensions, and heat number needed to verify conformity.

We verify inconel 601 composition at multiple stages. Material ratios are controlled during smelting, chemical analysis monitors the chemistry, and PMI testing is performed after production. Third-party laboratory analysis can be arranged for final confirmation.
