Hastelloy G3 Material Properties Overview

As a manufacturer and supplier in China, Arialloy supplies cost effective hastelloy G3 products.

Hastelloy G3 (UNS N06985 / W.Nr. 2.4619) is an austenitic nickel alloy containing chromium, iron, molybdenum and copper. Its composition combines 21.0 to 23.5% chromium, 18.0 to 21.0% iron, 6.0 to 8.0% molybdenum and 1.5 to 2.5% copper, with nickel forming the balance. This combination provides resistance to both oxidizing and reducing media. Chromium supports resistance to oxidizing chemicals, while nickel and copper contribute to resistance in reducing conditions. Molybdenum improves protection against pitting and crevice attack. Carbon is limited to 0.015%, helping reduce sensitization and preserve resistance to intergranular corrosion around welded joints. The nickel content also contributes to resistance against stress corrosion cracking in environments containing chlorides.

The alloy combines good weldability with ductility in the annealed condition. Conventional arc welding processes can be used with suitable filler materials. Cold working increases strength and hardness, while annealing restores a softer condition. Heat treatment does not provide an age hardening response, so the required mechanical properties depend on the processing route and final material condition.

These characteristics give hastelloy G3 a balance of chemical resistance, fabrication flexibility and mechanical performance, with particular resistance to phosphoric and sulfuric acids.

Hastelloy G-3 Corrosion Resistance

Hastelloy G3 resists general corrosion in both oxidizing and reducing environments, with particular strength in phosphoric and sulfuric acids. Its molybdenum content improves resistance to localized attack, while nickel helps resist stress corrosion cracking in solutions containing chlorides.

Low carbon reduces sensitization during welding, helping preserve resistance to intergranular attack in the surrounding metal. Corrosion performance depends on acid concentration, temperature, impurities and the balance between oxidizing and reducing species. These factors should be assessed together when comparing resistance in mixed or contaminated acid solutions.

Hastelloy G3 Mechanical Properties

In the annealed condition, hastelloy G3 has typical room temperature tensile strength of approximately 690 MPa, 0.2% offset yield strength of 320 MPa and elongation of 50%. This combination provides useful strength and substantial ductility for subsequent fabrication. Cold working increases strength and hardness, with a corresponding reduction in the ductility available for further deformation.

Hastelloy G-3 Temperature Characteristics

Hastelloy G3 has a melting range of approximately 1260 to 1343°C. Its thermal conductivity increases from about 10.0 W/m·K at 25°C to 21.8 W/m·K at 600°C. Its specific heat is approximately 453 J/kg·K at 25°C. The mean thermal expansion coefficient is approximately 14.6 µm/m·°C between 24 and 100°C, rising to 15.1 µm/m·°C between 24 and 600°C.

These values describe its response to heating and do not establish a maximum operating temperature. Temperature limits depend on the corrosive environment, applied stress, exposure duration and metallurgical condition.
