Hastelloy B Material Properties Overview

As a manufacturer and supplier in China, Arialloy supplies hastelloy B products at competitive prices.

Hastelloy B (UNS N10001) is an alloy based on nickel and molybdenum that combines resistance to reducing acids with solid solution strength. Its composition contains 26.0% to 30.0% molybdenum and 4.0% to 6.0% iron, with nickel forming the balance and chromium limited to 1.0% maximum. Molybdenum improves resistance to hydrochloric acid and other reducing solutions while strengthening the nickel matrix. The predominantly austenitic structure provides useful ductility in the solution annealed condition. Its corrosion behavior depends strongly on the oxidizing potential of the surrounding medium. Acid concentration, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and metallic contaminants therefore influence the resistance of hastelloy B, particularly when otherwise reducing solutions become contaminated during exposure.

During welding, hastelloy B can develop carbides at grain boundaries, leaving adjacent regions more vulnerable to intergranular attack. Welding heat input, cooling conditions, and any subsequent solution treatment therefore require careful consideration. Appropriate solution annealing followed by rapid cooling helps dissolve detrimental precipitates and preserve the alloy’s resistance to corrosive media.

Hastelloy B Corrosion Resistance

Hastelloy B provides strong resistance to hydrochloric acid and to sulfuric acid at moderate concentrations under reducing conditions. It also resists acetic acid and certain other organic acids in the absence of oxidizing contaminants.

Its low chromium content limits resistance to oxidizing media. Nitric acid, ferric salts, cupric salts, and dissolved oxygen can substantially increase corrosion. Resistance to chloride induced stress corrosion cracking also depends on metallurgical condition, since detrimental precipitation can reduce performance. Acid purity and prior thermal exposure are therefore important considerations.

Hastelloy B Mechanical Properties

In the solution annealed condition, hastelloy B combines strength with substantial tensile ductility. Room temperature reference minimum values include tensile strength of 690 MPa (100,000 psi), 0.2% offset yield strength of 310 MPa (45,000 psi), and elongation of 40%. Cold working raises strength and hardness while reducing the ductility available for subsequent forming.

These figures are reference values; acceptance requirements depend on product form, dimensions, delivery condition, and the applicable specification agreed for the supplied material.

Hastelloy B Temperature Characteristics

The temperature characteristics of hastelloy B depend on both the surrounding atmosphere and its metallurgical condition. Heating can promote grain boundary carbide precipitation, reducing resistance to intergranular corrosion. Prolonged thermal exposure may also alter strength and ductility through the formation of detrimental phases. Solution annealing followed by rapid cooling helps restore a suitable microstructure.

Its low chromium content limits oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures. Consequently, temperature capability must be evaluated together with exposure duration, atmosphere, and prior processing rather than expressed as a universal maximum.
