Monel 400 Material Properties Overview
As a leading supplier & manufacturer in China, Arialloy supply cost effective Monel 400 Products.
Monel 400 (UNS N04400 / W.Nr. 2.4360 and 2.4361) is a nickel copper alloy offering high strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and good toughness over a wide range of temperatures. Its high nickel content provides strong resistance to many reducing environments, while copper improves resistance to seawater, non oxidizing chloride solutions, and alkaline media. Small amounts of iron and manganese contribute to the alloy’s mechanical properties and corrosion performance. As a single phase solid solution alloy, Monel alloy 400 cannot be strengthened by precipitation heat treatment, but its strength can be substantially increased through cold working. The alloy maintains good ductility and toughness in both annealed and cold worked conditions.
Monel 400 also combines good weldability, formability, and thermal conductivity with excellent resistance to many corrosive environments. It is particularly resistant to hydrofluoric acid and provides good resistance to hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, seawater, and many alkaline solutions under suitable conditions. The alloy retains excellent toughness at low temperatures and maintains useful mechanical properties over a broad temperature range. Its properties can be adjusted through annealing, stress relieving, and controlled cold working to meet different strength and ductility requirements.
Monel 400 Corrosion Resistance
Monel 400 offers excellent resistance to corrosion in many reducing environments and provides particularly strong resistance to seawater, brackish water, and non oxidizing chloride solutions. It exhibits exceptional resistance to hydrofluoric acid in a wide range of concentrations and temperatures, and also resists many forms of hydrochloric and sulfuric acids under reducing conditions. The alloy generally provides excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking in fresh and industrial waters.
Its corrosion performance depends strongly on temperature, aeration, concentration, and flow conditions. Under flowing seawater conditions, corrosion rates are very low, while stagnant conditions can increase the risk of localized corrosion such as pitting and crevice attack. Resistance is reduced in strongly oxidizing environments, and oxidizing acids such as nitric acid are generally considered unsuitable conditions for Monel alloy 400.
Monel 400 Mechanical Properties
In the annealed condition, Monel 400 typically exhibits tensile strengths of 517 to 620 MPa (75 to 90 ksi), yield strengths of 172 to 345 MPa (25 to 50 ksi), and elongations of approximately 40%. The alloy provides a useful balance of strength and ductility, allowing fabrication while maintaining good toughness. Because monel 400 is strengthened primarily by cold working, tensile and yield strengths can increase significantly as the degree of deformation increases.
Heat treatment does not provide precipitation hardening for this alloy. Annealing is mainly used to restore ductility and reduce the effects of cold deformation, while stress relieving can reduce residual stresses with limited changes to the basic material characteristics. Cold worked conditions can provide substantially higher strength than the annealed condition while retaining useful toughness.
Monel 400 Temperature Characteristics
Monel 400 maintains useful mechanical properties over a wide temperature range and retains excellent toughness at subzero temperatures. Its nickel copper composition provides good stability at low temperatures, while strength gradually decreases as temperature increases. The alloy has a melting range of approximately 1300 to 1350°C (2370 to 2460°F) and retains useful properties at moderately elevated temperatures.
The mean coefficient of thermal expansion is approximately 13.9 μm/m °C from 21 to 93°C, while thermal conductivity is approximately 21.8 W/m °C at room temperature. Monel alloy 400 can retain useful properties to approximately 540°C in oxidizing atmospheres and at higher temperatures under reducing conditions, although the allowable temperature depends strongly on the service environment and mechanical requirements.

Since alloys contain multiple metallic elements, their pricing is strongly affected by the cost of the metals used to make them. For superalloys, key materials such as nickel and copper account for a substantial part of the overall price. When these raw metal prices move, the alloy price usually follows.
All of our monel 400 materials are melted internally. Our factory operates over 30 vacuum melting and electroslag remelting furnaces, available in four capacities 50 kg, 200 kg, 1,000 kg, and 5,000 kg. This flexible equipment setup enables us to support smaller MOQs as well as larger production batches.
Yes, material test reports for monel 400 are issued according to industry standards prior to dispatch. They cover the applicable material standard, chemical analysis, mechanical test results, dimensions, and heat number to verify compliance.
We maintain strict control over material ratios throughout the monel 400 melting process and use chemical analysis to monitor the alloy chemistry. Once finished, the material undergoes PMI testing, with independent laboratory analysis available upon request.
