Hastelloy C-276 Material Properties Overview

As a manufacturer and supplier in China, Arialloy supplies competitively priced hastelloy C276 products.

Hastelloy C276 (UNS N10276 / W.Nr. 2.4819) is an austenitic nickel alloy containing chromium, molybdenum and tungsten. Its nominal composition includes approximately 16% chromium, 16% molybdenum and 4% tungsten, providing broad resistance to aggressive aqueous environments. Chromium contributes resistance to oxidizing media, while molybdenum supports resistance to reducing acids and localized corrosion. Tungsten further improves resistance to attack in chloride solutions. Very low carbon and silicon contents reduce the formation of harmful precipitates during welding, helping preserve corrosion resistance in the surrounding base metal. The alloy combines these chemical characteristics with good ductility and weldability, allowing fabrication in the solution annealed condition while retaining a useful balance of strength and resistance to corrosion.

The alloy can be joined using common arc welding processes and suitable filler metals of matching composition. Careful heat input management and clean joint surfaces help maintain weld quality. Heat treatment after welding is generally unnecessary for most corrosive environments, although severe forming or particular service conditions may require solution annealing to restore optimum properties.

Hastelloy C276 Corrosion Resistance

Hastelloy C276 provides strong resistance to general corrosion, pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking caused by chlorides. Its low carbon content helps limit carbide precipitation during welding, preserving resistance to intergranular attack near welded joints.

The alloy resists many hydrochloric, sulfuric, phosphoric and organic acid solutions, as well as wet chlorine and hypochlorite media. Performance depends on temperature, concentration and oxidizing contaminants. Strongly oxidizing conditions, particularly hot concentrated nitric acid, require separate evaluation because resistance is less favorable than in many reducing acid environments.

Hastelloy C-276 Mechanical Properties

In the solution annealed condition, hastelloy C276 combines tensile strength with high ductility. Typical room temperature results for 25.4 mm plate include a tensile strength of 785 MPa, a 0.2% offset yield strength of 365 MPa and 59% elongation. Cold working increases strength and hardness while reducing ductility. This behavior increases subsequent forming loads.

These figures represent typical test results, rather than guaranteed minimum values. Acceptance requirements depend on the applicable product specification, dimensions and delivery condition.

Hastelloy C276 Temperature Characteristics

Hastelloy C276 retains useful ductility as temperature rises, although tensile strength and elastic modulus decrease. Prolonged exposure between approximately 600°C and 1100°C can promote intermetallic precipitation and grain boundary carbides, reducing corrosion resistance. Solution annealing at approximately 1121°C followed by rapid cooling helps restore the appropriate metallurgical condition.

Its melting range is approximately 1323°C to 1371°C, but this does not define a permissible operating temperature. Temperature limits must account for the corrosive medium, exposure duration, mechanical loading and the condition of the material.
