Inconel 617 Material Properties Overview

As a manufacturer in China, Arialloy supplies inconel 617 products in multiple forms and specifications.

Inconel 617 (UNS N06617 / W.Nr. 2.4663) is an austenitic nickel alloy containing chromium, cobalt and molybdenum, with strength derived primarily from solid solution hardening. Its composition includes 20.0 to 24.0% chromium, 10.0 to 15.0% cobalt, 8.0 to 10.0% molybdenum and 0.8 to 1.5% aluminum. Cobalt and molybdenum strengthen the nickel matrix, while chromium and aluminum support resistance to oxidation at elevated temperatures. This balance gives the alloy a combination of creep strength, metallurgical stability and resistance to carburization. In the solution annealed condition, inconel 617 retains useful ductility and can be shaped through conventional hot and cold forming processes. During cold deformation, work hardening increases strength, so substantial forming may require intermediate annealing stages.

Inconel filler metal 617 and inconel welding electrode 117 provide compatible consumables for joining this alloy. Matching filler chemistry helps maintain strength and corrosion resistance across the welded joint. The material is generally supplied after solution annealing and rapid cooling, with heat treatment conditions selected according to product form, section thickness and processing requirements.

Inconel 617 Corrosion Resistance

Inconel 617 offers strong resistance to oxidation and carburization at elevated temperatures. Chromium and aluminum promote a protective oxide structure that limits further attack and helps the surface layer remain adherent during repeated heating and cooling.

Nickel, chromium and molybdenum also contribute to resistance in a range of corrosive aqueous environments. The alloy tolerates various reducing and oxidizing media, although performance depends on temperature, concentration and contaminants. In hot gases, the surrounding atmosphere and exposure duration influence oxide stability and the extent of carbon absorption.

Inconel 617 Mechanical Properties

At room temperature, typical solution annealed inconel 617 products exhibit tensile strengths of 734 to 769 MPa and 0.2% offset yield strengths of 318 to 383 MPa. Elongations of 56 to 62% demonstrate substantial ductility. These representative results cover wrought plate, bar, tubing, sheet and strip products, with differences reflecting manufacturing route and specimen orientation.

Inconel 617 Temperature Characteristics

Inconel 617 retains substantial creep rupture strength at temperatures above 980°C (1800°F), together with resistance to oxidation and carburization. Thermal expansion is relatively low compared with that of many other austenitic alloys. Thermal conductivity increases with temperature, while elastic modulus gradually decreases.

Extended thermal exposure can change carbide precipitation and promote gamma prime formation at approximately 650 to 760°C, affecting strength and ductility. Oxidation resistance reaches approximately 1100°C under suitable conditions, while the permissible temperature under sustained loading depends on stress, exposure time and atmosphere.

For customers who want less logistics work on their side, we can arrange the transportation and calculate the applicable freight.

One of the main reasons alloy prices fluctuate is that the metals used in their production are themselves subject to market changes. Nickel, chromium, cobalt, and molybdenum and other metallic elements can account for a large share of the cost, making alloy prices responsive to changes in raw metal markets.

The smelting stage for our inconel 617 production is completed in house. Our plant is equipped with more than 30 vacuum smelting and electroslag remelting furnaces, covering 50 kg, 200 kg, 1,000 kg, and 5,000 kg capacities. This production flexibility is what enables us to work with smaller order quantities.

Yes, the inconel 617 MTR is issued before shipment and prepared according to industry standards. It documents the material standard, elemental composition, mechanical test results, dimensions, and heat number.

We ensure inconel 617 chemistry remains controlled by monitoring material ratios during smelting and conducting chemical analyses throughout production. Final material is subjected to PMI testing, with third-party laboratory analysis available when requested.
