Incoloy 925 Material Properties Overview

As a nickel alloy manufacturer and supplier in China, Arialloy supplies cost effective incoloy 925 products.

Incoloy 925 (UNS N09925) is an austenitic alloy of nickel, iron and chromium strengthened by aging heat treatment. Additions of molybdenum, copper, titanium and aluminum give the material a combination of corrosion resistance, tensile strength and hardness. Its composition includes 42% to 46% nickel, 19.5% to 22.5% chromium and 2.5% to 3.5% molybdenum.

Incoloy 925 combines good corrosion resistance with high strength and toughness. It offers good resistance to sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, seawater and aqueous solutions containing hydrogen sulfide, as well as pitting, crevice corrosion and chloride induced stress corrosion cracking. Gamma prime precipitates formed by titanium and aluminum increase the alloy’s strength and hardness while preserving useful ductility and good fatigue resistance. The alloy retains substantial strength at temperatures approaching 650°C and maintains good impact toughness down to minus 60°C.

Arialloy recommends incoloy 925 for customers seeking a combination of corrosion resistance and mechanical strength.

Incoloy 925 Corrosion Resistance

Incoloy 925 combines resistance to general corrosion with resistance to localized attack and environmentally assisted cracking. Nickel, molybdenum and copper strengthen its resistance to reducing media, including sulfuric and phosphoric acids. Chromium supports resistance to oxidizing solutions, while molybdenum improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.

The alloy also resists chloride induced stress corrosion cracking, intergranular corrosion and sulfide stress cracking. Its performance in seawater and aqueous media containing hydrogen sulfide reflects a balanced resistance to surface attack and cracking under tensile stress.

Incoloy 925 Mechanical Properties

Incoloy 925 gains strength and hardness through gamma prime precipitation during aging. At room temperature, solution annealed and aged round bar typically provides a tensile strength of 1154 MPa (167,300 psi), a 0.2% offset yield strength of 832 MPa (120,600 psi), an elongation of 27% and a hardness of 32 HRC.

Solution annealed round bar before aging has a typical tensile strength of 685 MPa (99,300 psi) and an elongation of 56%. This response to aging combines substantially increased strength with useful ductility.

Incoloy 925 Temperature Characteristics

Incoloy 925 retains substantial strength at temperatures up to approximately 650°C (1200°F) and maintains good impact toughness down to minus 60°C (minus 75°F). Its thermal conductivity increases from 12.0 W/m·K at 23°C to 19.3 W/m·K at 500°C.

The mean thermal expansion coefficient from 25°C to 500°C is 15.3 µm/m·°C. Its dynamic Young’s modulus decreases from approximately 199 GPa at 21°C to 160 GPa at 649°C. The formation of eta and sigma phases during elevated temperature exposure affects the alloy’s impact toughness.
