Monel R405 Material Properties Overview

As a manufacturer and supplier in China, Arialloy supplies cost effective monel R405 products.

Monel R405 (UNS N04405) is a nickel copper alloy that combines resistance to many corrosive media with improved machinability. Its composition includes at least 63.0% nickel plus cobalt, 28.0 to 34.0% copper, and 0.025 to 0.060% sulfur. The additional sulfur forms sulfide inclusions that help break chips during cutting. Compared with monel 400, it offers easier chip control while retaining broadly similar corrosion resistance and physical properties. Its strength depends on the supplied condition, and cold working increases strength and hardness without precipitation hardening. The nickel copper matrix provides resistance to seawater, alkaline solutions, and certain reducing acids, although the concentration, temperature, and oxygen content of the medium influence its corrosion performance.

Machining requires rigid equipment, sharp tools, suitable lubrication, and steady feeds to limit work hardening at the cutting surface. Although sulfur improves chip breakage, the resulting inclusions can produce a less smooth surface than monel 400. Surface finish requirements should therefore be considered when selecting cutting parameters and subsequent finishing operations.

Monel R-405 Corrosion Resistance

Monel R405 resists flowing seawater, brines, alkaline solutions, and chloride induced stress corrosion cracking. Its overall corrosion behavior is broadly comparable to monel 400, although stagnant seawater can promote localized pitting and crevice attack.

Resistance to hydrofluoric, sulfuric, and hydrochloric acids depends on concentration, temperature, and aeration. Deaerated conditions are generally more favorable, while dissolved oxygen and oxidizing salts can accelerate corrosion. Strongly oxidizing media, including nitric acid and ferric chloride solutions, are unsuitable. Sulfur improves machinability without providing a general increase in corrosion resistance.

Monel R405 Mechanical Properties

Annealed monel R405 bar and rod typically have tensile strengths of 70,000 to 85,000 psi (483 to 586 MPa), yield strengths of 25,000 to 40,000 psi (172 to 276 MPa), and elongations of 35 to 50%. Cold drawn material can reach tensile strengths of 85,000 to 115,000 psi (586 to 793 MPa), with reduced ductility.

Monel R-405 Temperature Characteristics

Monel R405 has thermal properties broadly equivalent to monel 400, with a melting range of 1300 to 1350°C. Thermal conductivity increases from approximately 22 W/(m·K) at 21°C to 36.5 W/(m·K) at 500°C, while thermal expansion also increases with temperature. These physical property data do not establish a maximum continuous operating temperature.

Elevated temperature performance depends on material condition, applied stress, exposure duration, and atmosphere. Prolonged heating can reduce strength gained through cold working, so room temperature mechanical values should not be assumed to remain unchanged.

The cost of an alloy depends heavily on the prices of the metals that go into its composition. In the case of superalloys, nickel, copper, and sulfur are particularly important cost drivers. Any significant movement in their prices can be reflected in the price of the finished alloy.

We handle the smelting of monel r405 ourselves rather than purchasing pre smelted material. Our factory is equipped with more than 30 furnaces, including vacuum and electroslag remelting units in four different sizes. Their 50 kg, 200 kg, 1,000 kg, and 5,000 kg capacities allow us to produce different batch volumes and support smaller MOQs.

Yes. Prior to shipment, we issue material test reports for monel r405 that comply with industry standards. The reports contain details on material standards, chemical composition, mechanical performance, dimensions, and heat identification.

During production, monel r405 material proportions are strictly managed and chemical analyses are conducted to monitor the alloy composition. Finished products are then subjected to PMI testing, with third party chemical analysis available for additional confirmation.
