Hastelloy B2 Material Properties Overview

As a manufacturer and supplier in China, Arialloy supplies competitively priced hastelloy B2 products.

Hastelloy B2 (UNS N10665 / W.Nr. 2.4617) is a nickel molybdenum alloy strengthened by solid solution, offering strong resistance to aggressive reducing acids. Its molybdenum content of 26% to 30% provides the main contribution to acid resistance, while the nickel matrix supports ductility and resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking. Carbon and silicon are limited to reduce detrimental precipitation during welding and help preserve corrosion resistance near welded joints. Compared with the earlier hastelloy B alloy, B2 contains less carbon, silicon and iron. Chromium is present only in small amounts, so its resistance to oxidizing environments is limited. The alloy is normally supplied in the solution annealed condition to maintain its ductile face centered cubic nickel matrix.

Conventional arc welding processes can join hastelloy B2 when suitable filler metals and appropriate procedures are used. Clean joint surfaces, low heat input and careful temperature control help limit contamination and unwanted structural changes. Cold forming increases work hardening, and substantial deformation may require intermediate annealing to restore ductility before further processing.

Hastelloy B-2 Corrosion Resistance

Hastelloy B2 provides excellent resistance to hydrochloric acid over a broad range of concentrations and temperatures. It also withstands sulfuric, phosphoric and acetic acids under reducing conditions, while its high nickel content provides resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking.

Oxidizing contaminants can sharply reduce this resistance. Small amounts of ferric or cupric ions may cause rapid attack in otherwise compatible acids. Corrosion behavior depends on acid concentration, temperature, dissolved oxygen and other impurities, so performance should be evaluated against the complete chemical environment.

Hastelloy B2 Mechanical Properties

In the solution annealed condition at room temperature, hastelloy B2 plate and sheet commonly have specified minimum tensile strength of 760 MPa, minimum 0.2% yield strength of 350 MPa and minimum elongation of 40%. This combination provides strength with useful ductility. Cold working increases strength and hardness while reducing the remaining capacity for deformation.

Actual measured properties depend on product form, dimensions and processing history. Acceptance requirements should follow the applicable material specification and relevant purchase order.

Hastelloy B-2 Temperature Characteristics

Hastelloy B2 is sensitive to thermal exposure that promotes brittle intermetallic phases. Temperatures of approximately 538°C to 871°C can reduce ductility through secondary phase formation, with rapid precipitation of Ni4Mo occurring near 750°C. Heating and cooling rates therefore require careful attention during fabrication.

Solution annealing at approximately 1065°C followed by rapid water quenching helps restore the desired structure. These heat treatment temperatures do not represent continuous operating limits. Performance at elevated temperatures also depends on exposure duration, mechanical loading and the surrounding chemical environment.
