Hastelloy C-4 Material Properties Overview
As a manufacturer and supplier in China, Arialloy supplies competitively priced hastelloy C4 products.
Hastelloy C4 (UNS N06455 / W.Nr. 2.4610) is an austenitic nickel alloy containing approximately 16% chromium and 16% molybdenum. Its defining characteristic is strong resistance to microstructural changes during welding and subsequent thermal exposure. This stability reduces the risk of sensitization in regions heated during welding. Chromium contributes to corrosion resistance in oxidizing media, while molybdenum improves performance in reducing acids and increases resistance to localized attack. The nickel matrix provides excellent resistance to chloride induced stress corrosion cracking. Low carbon and silicon contents help reduce harmful precipitation, while the low iron content supports structural stability. This composition combines broad chemical resistance with good ductility and weldability.
The alloy accommodates conventional hot forming, cold forming and machining, although its tendency to work harden requires suitable processing conditions. It can be joined using TIG, MIG and shielded metal arc welding, with matching filler wire and welding electrodes available. Properly produced welds generally retain good corrosion resistance without subsequent heat treatment. Solution annealing restores optimum properties after substantial forming.
Hastelloy C4 Corrosion Resistance
Hastelloy C4 offers strong resistance to general corrosion, chloride induced stress corrosion cracking, and localized pitting and crevice attack. Its resistance to sensitization helps preserve corrosion performance in the heat affected zones of welded joints.
The alloy withstands a broad range of oxidizing and reducing media, including hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and solutions containing chlorides or other halides. Good resistance also extends to formic and acetic acids. Performance depends on solution temperature, acid concentration and dissolved impurities, which determine the severity of the corrosive environment.
Hastelloy C-4 Mechanical Properties
In the solution annealed condition, hastelloy C4 sheet and plate show typical room temperature tensile strengths of 767 to 805 MPa, 0.2% yield strengths of 335 to 421 MPa, and elongations of 52 to 63%. This balance of strength and ductility allows the alloy to undergo substantial deformation before fracture. Cold working increases strength and hardness but reduces ductility.
Hastelloy C4 Temperature Characteristics
Hastelloy C4 shows a reduced tendency to form harmful precipitates during thermal exposure between approximately 650°C and 1040°C. This structural stability helps preserve ductility and resistance to intergranular corrosion after heating. The extent of any property change depends on exposure temperature and duration.
Thermal conductivity and expansion increase with temperature, while elastic stiffness decreases. Solution annealing followed by rapid cooling restores a favorable material condition. The thermal stability range does not establish a universal continuous operating limit, which also depends on applied loading and environment.
