Inconel 740H Material Properties Overview

As a manufacturer and supplier in China, Arialloy supplies inconel 740H products at competitive prices.

Inconel 740H (UNS N07740) is a precipitation hardenable nickel alloy with an austenitic matrix, approximately 24.5% chromium and 20% cobalt. Aluminum, titanium and niobium promote the formation of gamma prime Ni3(Al,Ti,Nb), which strengthens the matrix and improves resistance to creep deformation. Chromium supports resistance to oxidation and hot corrosion, while the balance of strengthening elements contributes to stability during prolonged heating.

Compared with the original inconel 740 composition, the 740H modification adjusts the aluminum to titanium ratio and reduces niobium, silicon and boron to improve microstructural stability and reduce susceptibility to liquation cracking during welding. Grain boundary carbides also influence creep behavior and ductility, depending on their distribution and the exposure conditions. Inconel 740h can be processed into pipe, tube, bar, plate, sheet and forgings. Solution annealing followed by aging establishes its precipitation strengthened condition.

Inconel 740H Corrosion Resistance

Inconel 740H provides good resistance to steam oxidation and hot corrosion at elevated temperatures. Its high chromium content promotes the formation of a protective chromia scale, which limits oxygen transport and slows further surface degradation.

The alloy also shows resistance to corrosion beneath coal ash deposits. Its performance depends on deposit chemistry, sulfur and chlorine content, gas composition, temperature and duration of exposure. Steam exposure can still cause internal oxidation involving aluminum and titanium, so surface protection does not eliminate subsurface attack during prolonged exposure.

Inconel 740H Mechanical Properties

Solution annealed and aged inconel 740H combines high tensile strength with useful ductility. Representative room temperature results for extruded pipe show tensile strengths of 1066 to 1133 MPa, 0.2% offset yield strengths of 724 to 742 MPa, and elongations of 23.7 to 24.3%. These ranges reflect both longitudinal and transverse specimens from the tested pipe.

Inconel 740H Temperature Characteristics

Inconel 740H offers strong resistance to creep deformation at temperatures from 700 to 800°C. Its gamma prime precipitates and grain boundary carbides support strength during sustained exposure, although their size and distribution evolve with time.

Prolonged heating can coarsen the strengthening precipitates and affect toughness, making thermal history an important part of property assessment. Suitable operating conditions depend on the applied stress, required service life, product form and weld condition. Temperature limits should therefore be established from relevant creep rupture data and applicable allowable stresses.

The cost of alloying elements is an important part of the final inconel 740h price. When metals such as nickel, chromium, cobalt, molybdenum, titanium, and aluminum experience price increases or decreases, the production cost of the alloy can change as well, resulting in fluctuations in market quotations.

We are equipped to smelt inconel 740h internally rather than depending on external material sources. More than 30 vacuum smelting and electroslag remelting furnaces are available, covering batch capacities from 50 kg through 5,000 kg. This allows us to tailor production to the order size and accept smaller quantities.

We supply inconel 740h test certificates before dispatch, following the relevant industry standards. The certificate contains the material standard, chemical analysis, mechanical properties, dimensions, and heat number as supporting compliance documentation.

The inconel 740h alloy chemistry is controlled through monitored material ratios and chemical analysis during smelting. After the material is finished, PMI testing is performed, and we can arrange external laboratory testing to provide additional chemical results.
