Inconel 783 Material Properties Overview

As a leading supplier and manufacturer in China, Arialloy supplies cost effective inconel 783 products to agreed quality and purchasing specifications.

Inconel 783 (UNS R30783) is a nickel, cobalt, and iron alloy that combines a low coefficient of thermal expansion with precipitation strengthening and oxidation resistance. It contains 5.0 to 6.0% aluminum, together with chromium and niobium additions that support oxidation resistance and the precipitation response during heat treatment. After suitable heat treatment, its microstructure consists of an austenitic gamma matrix, fine gamma prime precipitates, and a nickel aluminide beta phase. Gamma prime provides much of the strength, while beta precipitates improve resistance to stress accelerated grain boundary oxidation. Its composition keeps thermal expansion low while retaining useful strength. With a density of approximately 7.81 g/cm³, the alloy offers a favorable balance between material weight and strength.

The alloy responds to solution annealing, beta aging, and subsequent precipitation hardening. This treatment sequence establishes the phase distribution needed for strength and oxidation resistance. Forming, machining, welding, and final heat treatment require procedures appropriate to the material condition, section thickness, dimensional requirements, and specified mechanical properties.

Inconel 783 Corrosion Resistance

Inconel 783 combines oxidation resistance with improved resistance to stress accelerated grain boundary oxidation. Its aluminum content and suitable beta phase distribution help limit oxygen related damage along grain boundaries under elevated temperature loading conditions.

In salt spray testing with 5% sodium chloride at 35°C for approximately 1000 hours, the alloy showed corrosion resistance comparable to inconel 718 and superior to incoloy 909. Performance depends on surface condition and subsequent thermal exposure, so results should be assessed against the specified corrosive environment.

Inconel 783 Mechanical Properties

Following solution annealing, beta aging, and precipitation hardening, inconel 783 typically provides a tensile strength of 1194 MPa, a yield strength of 779 MPa, and an elongation of 24% at 21°C. At 704°C, representative tensile and yield strengths are 807 MPa and 607 MPa, respectively, showing substantial strength retention at the higher test temperature.

Inconel 783 Temperature Characteristics

Inconel 783 combines low thermal expansion with useful strength and oxidation resistance to approximately 704°C. Its mean coefficient of linear expansion is approximately 12.87 µm/m/°C between 21°C and 649°C. Prolonged exposure can change precipitate size, reduce strength, and cause slight dimensional contraction through additional aging.

The response depends on temperature, exposure duration, and initial heat treatment. Thermal assessment should therefore consider creep, stress relaxation, and dimensional stability alongside tensile properties, using test data appropriate to the specified temperature range and loading conditions.

The market prices of the metals contained in an alloy are important drivers of its overall cost. For superalloys, metals such as nickel, iron, cobalt, chromium, and aluminum can substantially affect pricing. When these raw material markets change, alloy quotations may change accordingly.

Our production facility includes dedicated equipment for melting inconel 783 internally. We have over 30 vacuum smelting and electroslag remelting furnaces, with different capacities available for different batch sizes. Because the smallest furnaces can handle 50 kg batches, we can accept relatively small orders.

Yes, we issue material test reports for inconel 783 before the material is dispatched. These reports provide the relevant standard, chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensions, and heat number as evidence of compliance.

Inconel 783 production is subject to ratio control and chemical composition monitoring during smelting. After completion, the material is checked through PMI testing, while final chemical analysis by an independent laboratory can be arranged if required.
