Monel 502 Material Properties Overview

As a manufacturer and supplier in China, Arialloy supplies cost effective monel 502 products.

Monel 502 (UNS N05502) is a nickel and copper alloy that combines corrosion resistance with the ability to develop high strength through precipitation hardening. Its composition includes 63 to 70% nickel and 2.5 to 3.5% aluminum, with copper forming the balance and smaller amounts of iron, manganese, titanium, and silicon. The nickel and copper matrix provides the foundation for its corrosion behavior, while aluminum supports the formation of strengthening precipitates during aging. This response to thermal treatment allows strength and hardness to increase beyond the levels obtained in the annealed condition.

A distinguishing feature of monel 502 is its improved machinability. Cutting practices are broadly comparable to those used for austenitic stainless steels, although tool rigidity, cutting conditions, and material hardness remain important. The alloy can be shaped by conventional hot and cold working methods. Annealing softens the material for further processing, while subsequent aging develops the required mechanical properties.

The final balance of strength, ductility, and hardness depends on the processing sequence, section size, and heat treatment. These factors make the specified delivery condition an essential part of material selection and the interpretation of mechanical test results.

Monel 502 Corrosion Resistance

Monel 502 can offer corrosion resistance associated with its nickel and copper base, particularly in suitable seawater, salt solution, and reducing chemical environments. Actual resistance depends on solution composition, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and the condition of the material.

Oxidizing acids and oxidizing contaminants can increase attack, while stagnant conditions and deposits may promote localized corrosion. Increased hardness after aging should not be interpreted as improved corrosion resistance. Assessment of stress corrosion cracking requires consideration of the environment, applied stress, residual stress, and final heat treatment.

Monel 502 Mechanical Properties

Monel 502 develops increased strength and hardness through precipitation hardening. Published reference values include a tensile strength of approximately 1158 MPa, a yield strength of 1034 MPa, and an elongation of 15%. These figures should not be treated as guaranteed properties for every product form or delivery condition.

Cold working and aging affect the balance between strength and ductility. Acceptance requirements should therefore specify the product dimensions, heat treatment condition, test method, and applicable minimum values.

Monel 502 Temperature Characteristics

Monel 502 can retain high strength at temperatures up to approximately 427°C (800°F). Its performance at elevated temperatures depends on the initial heat treatment, applied stress, and duration of exposure. Prolonged heating can alter the strengthening precipitates and reduce the hardness obtained by aging.

Typical aging treatments use temperatures around 594 to 608°C (1100 to 1125°F), followed by furnace cooling. These processing temperatures are distinct from permissible operating temperatures. Creep behavior, oxidation, and microstructural stability must be evaluated separately when establishing limits for sustained exposure.

A major reason for changes in monel 502 prices is the movement of raw metal costs. The alloy contains valuable metallic elements, and the prices of key metals such as nickel, copper, and silicon can strongly influence the final cost. When those markets fluctuate, alloy prices may fluctuate as well.

We have complete in-house smelting capability for monel 502. More than 30 vacuum smelting and electroslag remelting furnaces are installed at our factory, with capacities of 50 kg, 200 kg, 1,000 kg, and 5,000 kg. This range allows us to match furnace capacity to the required production volume and keep our MOQ flexible.
