Hastelloy B-3 Material Properties Overview

As a manufacturer and supplier in China, Arialloy supplies competitively priced hastelloy B-3 products.

Hastelloy B-3 (UNS N10675 / W.Nr. 2.4600) is a nickel and molybdenum alloy combining strong resistance to reducing acids with improved structural stability. Its composition contains at least 65% nickel and approximately 28.5% molybdenum, together with small additions of chromium and iron. The high molybdenum content contributes to its resistance to hydrochloric acid and other nonoxidizing media. Low carbon and silicon levels help limit detrimental precipitation associated with welding and thermal exposure.

Compared with hastelloy B-2, the alloy develops harmful intermetallic phases more slowly, allowing greater retention of ductility during fabrication. This improvement reduces sensitivity to brief thermal cycles, while appropriate heat treatment remains important for maintaining corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.

The material can be hot worked, cold formed, and welded using established procedures for nickel alloys. Matching welding consumables support the production of joints that retain strong resistance to reducing acids in the as welded condition. Cold forming increases strength and may require intermediate annealing because the alloy work hardens readily.

Hastelloy B3 Corrosion Resistance

Hastelloy B-3 provides excellent resistance to hydrochloric acid and strong resistance to sulfuric, phosphoric, acetic, and formic acids under suitable reducing conditions. It also resists stress corrosion cracking caused by chlorides and retains good corrosion resistance after welding.

Performance depends on acid concentration, temperature, and contamination. Ferric and cupric salts can sharply accelerate corrosion, so their presence requires particular attention. The alloy is generally unsuitable for strongly oxidizing media, including nitric acid. Resistance in pure acids should not be assumed to apply to contaminated mixtures.

Hastelloy B-3 Mechanical Properties

At room temperature, solution annealed hastelloy B-3 sheet approximately 3.2 mm thick has typical tensile strength of 862 MPa, 0.2% yield strength of 421 MPa, and elongation of 53%. These values indicate a useful combination of strength and ductility. Cold working raises strength but can reduce formability and resistance to stress corrosion cracking.

Mechanical properties vary with product form, dimensions, and processing history. These typical values are informative and should not replace the requirements of the applicable material specification.

Hastelloy B3 Temperature Characteristics

Hastelloy B-3 has greater resistance to thermal embrittlement than hastelloy B-2 because harmful intermetallic phases develop more slowly. Nevertheless, prolonged exposure within approximately 500°C to 900°C can still reduce ductility and resistance to stress corrosion cracking.

Solution annealing is normally performed at approximately 1066°C (1950°F), followed by rapid cooling, preferably water quenching. This treatment temperature is not a continuous service rating. Thermal stability must be assessed together with exposure duration, material condition, and corrosion environment when determining an appropriate operating temperature.

Our sales team normally gets back to hastelloy b3 inquiries with pricing within 24 hours. If we need additional details or cannot provide a quotation for your request, we will let you know as soon as possible.

For FOB hastelloy b3 shipments, the customer generally decides which freight forwarder to use. Once the forwarder is appointed, we work with them on the required local arrangements. If you would rather have us coordinate transportation, we can arrange the shipment and check the corresponding freight.

An alloy’s selling price is strongly influenced by the prices of the metals required to produce it. Hastelloy B-3 relies on multiple metallic elements, and movements in the markets for nickel and molybdenum and other inputs can affect its overall cost.

We can smelt hastelloy b3 ourselves because our factory has extensive in house furnace capacity. More than 30 vacuum smelting and electroslag remelting furnaces are available in four sizes, allowing us to handle batches from 50 kg to 5,000 kg. This is also why we can support smaller orders.

Certainly, we provide material certification for hastelloy b3 before shipment. The certificate contains the relevant standard, chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensions, and heat number and can be used to verify conformity.

During the manufacture of hastelloy b3, we monitor composition through controlled material ratios and chemical analysis. Once the material is complete, PMI testing is performed, and a third-party laboratory can conduct final chemical analysis if required.
