Inconel 718 Material Properties Overview

As a nickel alloy manufacturer and supplier in China, Arialloy supplies inconel 718 products.

Inconel 718 (UNS N07718 / W.Nr. 2.4668) is an austenitic nickel alloy containing chromium, iron, niobium, and molybdenum, together with smaller additions of titanium and aluminum. It combines high strength with corrosion resistance and good fabrication characteristics. Niobium plays a central role in precipitation strengthening, while titanium and aluminum contribute to the formation of strengthening phases during aging. Nickel supports the austenitic matrix, chromium contributes to oxidation resistance, and molybdenum provides additional solid solution strengthening. Solution treatment followed by aging develops the alloy’s characteristic mechanical properties by preparing the matrix and promoting the formation of strengthening precipitates. The resulting properties depend on the thermal processing sequence and final material condition.

The relatively slow aging response of inconel 718 helps limit hardening during fabrication and reduces susceptibility to cracking during heat treatment after welding. Forming and machining are generally easier in the solution annealed condition. Subsequent aging increases strength, while the selected solution treatment influences grain structure, ductility, and resistance to rupture under sustained loading.

Inconel 718 Corrosion Resistance

Inconel 718 resists corrosion in a variety of aqueous environments. Nickel contributes resistance to many organic and inorganic compounds and helps resist stress corrosion cracking caused by chloride ions. Chromium improves resistance to oxidizing media, while molybdenum contributes protection against pitting.

Its corrosion performance depends on temperature, solution chemistry, and metallurgical condition. Resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking does not imply immunity to localized attack. Aggressive acidic chloride solutions require evaluation of pitting and crevice corrosion under the actual exposure conditions.

Inconel 718 Mechanical Properties

After solution treatment and aging, inconel 718 sheet and plate can meet room temperature minimum tensile and yield strengths of 180,000 psi (1241 MPa) and 150,000 psi (1034 MPa), respectively, with at least 12% elongation under applicable AMS 5596 requirements. The solution annealed condition provides lower strength and greater ductility.

Mechanical requirements vary with product form, dimensions, and heat treatment. These values should therefore be matched to the specified product and delivery condition.

Inconel 718 Temperature Characteristics

Inconel 718 retains high strength at temperatures up to approximately 650°C (1200°F), with useful properties extending toward 704°C (1300°F) under suitable loading and exposure conditions. It also maintains good ductility at cryogenic temperatures. Prolonged exposure near the upper temperature range can alter strengthening precipitates and reduce strength and creep resistance.

Oxidation resistance alone does not establish an allowable operating temperature. Thermal conductivity and thermal expansion increase with temperature, while elastic modulus decreases, making temperature and exposure duration essential considerations when assessing its mechanical performance.

The price of an alloy can move significantly when the cost of its metallic raw materials changes. Nickel, chromium, iron, niobium, and molybdenum are key contributors to the cost of many superalloys, meaning fluctuations in their prices can be passed through to the finished material.

We have in house melting capabilities for inconel 718 supported by a fleet of over 30 vacuum smelting and electroslag remelting furnaces. The available capacities are 50 kg, 200 kg, 1,000 kg, and 5,000 kg. Such a wide range enables us to accommodate production runs of different sizes, including smaller orders.

Our inconel 718 test reports are prepared and supplied before shipment in accordance with recognized industry standards. They document key material information, including chemistry, mechanical properties, dimensions, and heat number.

Material proportions are carefully controlled while melting inconel 718, and chemical analysis is used to monitor the resulting composition. We then perform PMI testing on the finished product and can obtain third-party laboratory results for further verification.
