Incoloy MA956 Material Properties Overview

As a leading supplier and manufacturer in China, Arialloy supplies cost effective incoloy MA956 products. Incoloy MA956 (UNS S67956) is a mechanically alloyed iron chromium aluminum ODS material strengthened by a fine dispersion of yttrium oxide particles.

Its structure differs from conventional nickel rich incoloy grades because the alloy relies on a ferritic FeCrAl matrix and stable oxide dispersoids for high temperature performance. Chromium and aluminum support a protective oxide system, while aluminum promotes formation of a dense adherent alumina scale that provides excellent resistance to oxidation, carburization and sulfidation. The oxide dispersion impedes dislocation movement and stabilizes the microstructure, giving the alloy high tensile and yield strength together with strong creep and rupture capability. Room temperature ductility is more moderate than its strength, reflecting the directional ODS microstructure.

At elevated temperatures, the fine oxide particles retain their strengthening effect and the alumina scale continues to protect the surface, giving incoloy MA956 excellent oxidation resistance to about 1300°C and strong structural stability during prolonged thermal exposure. Its relatively low thermal expansion also supports dimensional stability.

Arialloy recommends incoloy MA956 for buyers who prioritize oxidation resistance, creep strength and long term high temperature stability.

Incoloy MA956 Corrosion Resistance

Incoloy MA956 develops strong corrosion resistance through its chromium and aluminum rich ferritic matrix. Chromium supports passivation in oxidizing media, while aluminum forms a dense and tightly adherent alumina surface layer that restricts further attack.

This protective scale gives the alloy excellent resistance to high temperature oxidation and strong resistance to carburization, sulfidation and metal dusting. Its corrosion profile is strongest in oxidizing environments and alkaline or salt containing media, with the alumina layer providing a stable barrier against continued surface degradation.

Incoloy MA956 Mechanical Properties

Incoloy MA956 combines high strength with strong creep and rupture capability through oxide dispersion strengthening. Typical room temperature values include a tensile strength of about 650 MPa, a yield strength of about 550 MPa and elongation of about 9%. Fine yttrium oxide particles impede dislocation movement and remain stable at elevated temperature, allowing the ferritic matrix to retain useful strength as temperature rises.

The alloy therefore emphasizes strength, creep resistance and structural stability more strongly than high ductility, with particularly strong performance during prolonged thermal loading.

Incoloy MA956 Temperature Characteristics

Incoloy MA956 has exceptional high temperature stability because its yttrium oxide dispersion remains effective at temperatures where conventional strengthening precipitates lose stability.

Aluminum promotes formation of a slow growing and strongly adherent alpha alumina scale, giving the alloy excellent oxidation resistance to about 1300°C. The oxide dispersion also supports creep and rupture strength during prolonged thermal exposure, while the ferritic matrix provides relatively low thermal expansion and good dimensional stability.

Together, these characteristics allow incoloy MA956 to retain strength, surface protection and structural integrity across a very high temperature range.
