Incoloy 908 Material Properties Overview

As a manufacturer and supplier in China, Arialloy supplies incoloy 908 products for demanding material requirements.

Incoloy 908 (UNS N09908) is an age hardenable nickel and iron alloy that combines low thermal expansion with high strength and excellent cryogenic toughness. Its composition contains 47 to 51% nickel, 3.75 to 4.50% chromium, and additions of niobium, titanium, and aluminum. Iron forms the balance. The nickel and iron matrix provides its characteristic thermal expansion behavior, while precipitation strengthening increases resistance to mechanical deformation. Aluminum and titanium promote the formation of the gamma prime strengthening phase within the matrix. This metallurgical structure gives the alloy a useful combination of strength, ductility, and resistance to crack propagation.

The alloy retains substantial fracture toughness at cryogenic temperatures and resists fatigue crack growth during repeated loading. Its low thermal contraction closely matches that of niobium tin superconductors, reducing differential strain during cooling. Metallurgical stability during extended aging is another important feature, allowing the strengthening structure to develop without rapid transformation into less favorable phases.

Good ductility and weldability complement these properties and support fabrication into structural material. The combination of thermal compatibility and cryogenic mechanical performance makes incoloy 908 a specialist material for superconducting magnet sheathing and related cryogenic structures.

Incoloy 908 Corrosion Resistance

Incoloy 908 provides moderate corrosion resistance, with its nickel rich matrix supporting general environmental stability and its chromium addition improving oxidation behavior and resistance to oxygen related grain boundary attack. The chromium content gives incoloy 908 better resistance to oxidizing exposure than chromium free controlled expansion grades. Niobium, titanium and aluminum also contribute to a stable precipitation strengthened structure. Its corrosion characteristics are centered on oxidation resistance and metallurgical stability rather than aggressive acid or chloride resistance, giving the alloy a balanced corrosion profile alongside its low expansion and high strength properties.

Incoloy 908 Mechanical Properties

Incoloy 908 combines high strength with substantial fracture toughness at cryogenic temperatures. At 4.2 K, solution annealed and aged material exhibits an average yield strength of approximately 1200 MPa and fracture toughness above 230 MPa√m. These properties provide strong resistance to plastic deformation and crack extension.

The alloy also resists fatigue crack propagation. Its fatigue crack growth rate at 4.2 K is approximately one third of that at room temperature, complementing its strength and toughness under repeated mechanical loading.

Incoloy 908 Temperature Characteristics

Incoloy 908 exhibits low thermal expansion and strong metallurgical stability during aging. Its thermal expansion coefficient is approximately 8.59 µm/(m·°C) at 93°C and 8.66 µm/(m·°C) at 260°C. The Curie temperature is approximately 282°C, above which its expansion behavior changes more rapidly.

Gamma prime precipitation provides thermal strengthening, and the alloy retains this phase without transformation to eta during exposures of up to 100 hours at 750°C. Together, these characteristics combine limited dimensional change at lower temperatures with resistance to overaging during thermal treatment.

The main metallic ingredients of an alloy have a direct bearing on its price. For incoloy 908 and similar superalloys, the market costs of nickel, iron, cobalt, and chromium and other alloying metals can substantially influence the price of the finished material.

The incoloy 908 melting operation is performed by us directly. Our factory has more than 30 vacuum smelting and electroslag remelting furnaces, ranging from 50 kg to 5,000 kg. This allows us to select a suitable furnace for smaller production runs instead of requiring every order to meet a large batch size.

Yes. Prior to shipment, we issue an MTR for incoloy 908 containing the applicable standard, chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensions, and heat number. This documentation supports verification of product conformity.

We carefully regulate the materials used in incoloy 908 smelting and use chemical analysis to monitor the alloy chemistry. After production is complete, PMI testing provides another verification step, and an independent laboratory can perform final chemical analysis if requested.
