Hastelloy W Material Properties Overview

As a manufacturer and supplier in China, Arialloy offers competitively priced hastelloy W products.

Hastelloy W (UNS N10004) is a nickel based superalloy strengthened primarily by solid solution hardening. Its nominal composition contains approximately 63% nickel, 24% molybdenum, 5% chromium, and 6% iron. Molybdenum strengthens the nickel matrix and contributes to resistance in reducing environments, while chromium supports surface passivation. The alloy combines substantial mechanical strength with useful ductility and good weldability. Processing condition is important because deformation and thermal exposure can alter its mechanical response. Intermediate annealing during fabrication helps restore ductility after working. Wrought bar is typically solution treated at 1185°C and rapidly cooled, with the heating cycle and cooling method selected according to product dimensions and the applicable specification. This treatment also assists subsequent fabrication operations.

Compatible welding processes include gas tungsten arc welding, gas metal arc welding, and shielded metal arc welding. Sound weld formation requires clean surfaces, effective shielding, and suitable heat input. For dissimilar joints, dilution and the properties of the materials being joined influence the final strength, ductility, and response to subsequent heating.

Hastelloy W Corrosion Resistance

The high molybdenum content of hastelloy W provides a metallurgical basis for resistance to reducing media. Chromium contributes to surface passivation, while the nickel matrix supports the alloy’s overall corrosion performance.

Actual resistance depends on acid concentration, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and oxidizing impurities. Its relatively low chromium content warrants careful evaluation in strongly oxidizing solutions. Resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking should be established through testing under representative conditions, particularly when assessing weld metal whose composition has changed through dilution.

Hastelloy W Mechanical Properties

In room temperature testing, solution treated hastelloy W bar (AMS 5755) exhibits typical tensile strength of 965 MPa, 0.2% offset yield strength of 520 MPa, and elongation of 51%. For GTAW weld metal in the as welded condition, corresponding values are approximately 830 MPa, 550 MPa, and 35%, respectively.

Hastelloy W Temperature Characteristics

Hastelloy W retains substantial strength at elevated temperatures, with typical bar tensile strength of 610 MPa at 760°C and 415 MPa at 871°C. Its melting range is approximately 1290°C to 1375°C. Prolonged heating can alter strength and ductility.

After 1000 hours at 650°C, GTAW weld metal exhibits increased room temperature strength but reduced elongation, from 35% to 14%. These results demonstrate that thermal exposure can change mechanical properties, so temperature capability must be assessed alongside exposure duration, stress, and the surrounding atmosphere.

We normally quote hastelloy w FOB, under which customers generally appoint their own freight forwarder for transportation. We will provide the cooperation needed to complete the local shipping operations. If you would like us to handle the logistics instead, we can arrange the shipment and obtain the corresponding freight quotation.

The price of hastelloy w may change when the costs of its constituent metals change. Nickel, chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten and other alloying materials are important parts of the overall cost structure, so fluctuations in their prices can affect the alloy’s final market price.

We handle hastelloy w smelting ourselves at our own facility. More than 30 vacuum smelting and electroslag remelting furnaces are installed in the plant, with capacities of 50 kg, 200 kg, 1,000 kg, and 5,000 kg. Because we can scale the melting process to the order size, smaller minimum orders are possible.

Certainly. Before dispatch, we supply the hastelloy w test report containing the essential quality and traceability information. This includes the material standard, chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensions, and heat number, demonstrating compliance with requirements.

Our hastelloy w verification procedure covers the melt and finished product stages. We control the material ratios and monitor composition through chemical analysis during smelting, then perform PMI testing after completion. Additional third party chemical testing can be arranged upon request.
