Hastelloy S Material Properties Overview

As a manufacturer and supplier in China, Arialloy supplies competitively priced hastelloy S products for industrial purchasing requirements.

Hastelloy S (UNS N06635) is a nickel alloy containing chromium and molybdenum that combines thermal stability, resistance to oxidation and good fabricability. Its nominal composition includes approximately 16% chromium and 15% molybdenum, with nickel forming the balance. Chromium contributes to surface protection against oxidation, while molybdenum provides strengthening through solid solution effects. A small addition of lanthanum improves oxidation resistance. The alloy also contains minor amounts of aluminum, silicon and manganese. Low thermal expansion and resistance to thermal fatigue are important characteristics, helping the material accommodate repeated temperature changes while maintaining useful strength and ductility. This combination supports dimensional stability during repeated heating and cooling over extended periods of exposure.

The alloy can be processed by hot working and cold forming, with intermediate annealing used when necessary to restore ductility. Gas tungsten arc and gas metal arc welding are suitable joining methods. Matching hastelloy S filler metal produces weld deposits that combine thermal stability, low thermal expansion and resistance to oxidation during exposure to elevated temperatures.

Wrought hastelloy S products are normally supplied after solution annealing at approximately 1066°C, followed by cooling in air or hydrogen.

Hastelloy S Corrosion Resistance

Hastelloy S resists oxidation and several forms of attack at elevated temperatures. Comparative laboratory tests demonstrate resistance to nitriding, carburization and hot corrosion, although performance depends on temperature, exposure duration and atmosphere.

In flowing air at 982°C for 1,008 hours, with weekly cooling to room temperature, measured metal loss was approximately 0.005 mm, with combined metal loss and internal penetration of approximately 0.012 mm. These results reflect specific laboratory exposure conditions; resistance to aqueous acids or chloride solutions requires separate evaluation for the specified medium.

Hastelloy S Mechanical Properties

In the solution annealed condition, hastelloy S plate typically exhibits a room temperature tensile strength of 849 MPa and a 0.2% offset yield strength of 383 MPa, together with 55% elongation. These values represent plate thicknesses of 9.5 to 25.4 mm and illustrate the material’s combination of strength and ductility.

Hastelloy S Temperature Characteristics

Hastelloy S offers oxidation resistance up to approximately 1093°C, together with low thermal expansion and good resistance to thermal fatigue. It retains useful strength and ductility after aging between 427°C and 871°C, although the exact response depends on exposure temperature and duration.

Its mean thermal expansion coefficient is approximately 13.3 µm/m°C between 20°C and 538°C, increasing to 14.9 µm/m°C between 20°C and 871°C. These characteristics help limit dimensional changes from expansion during thermal cycling. Resistance to oxidation does not establish the allowable temperature under mechanical loading.

If you are ready to source hastelloy s from us, send your requirements to sales@arialloy.com or submit the form below. Our sales team will provide a detailed quotation for your review. Once you confirm the offer, send us your PO. We will prepare the PI for payment, begin production after receipt of the prepayment, and notify you once the materials are completed.

Our sales team generally provides the hastelloy s quotation within 24 hours after an inquiry is received. If we encounter missing information or cannot offer a quote, we will promptly communicate the situation.

For our regular hastelloy s FOB quotation, the customer generally chooses the freight forwarder and coordinates transportation through them. We will cooperate with the forwarder to handle the required local work. If convenience is your priority, we can also arrange shipping and check the associated transportation cost.

Raw metal price movements can have a substantial impact on hastelloy s quotations. The alloy’s cost depends partly on the market values of its metallic constituents, particularly important materials such as nickel, chromium, and molybdenum.

We are not dependent on an external supplier for hastelloy s smelting. Our own factory has over 30 vacuum smelting and electroslag remelting furnaces, with four different production capacities. This internal capability allows us to manufacture smaller batches and accept lower MOQs when required.

The hastelloy s material test report is issued before shipment in accordance with relevant industry standards. It provides documented details of the material standard, chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensions, and heat number.

We apply strict composition controls throughout hastelloy s production. Material ratios are managed during smelting, chemical analysis tracks the alloy chemistry, and PMI testing is used on finished products. Third-party laboratory analysis is available for additional assurance.
