Hastelloy N Material Properties Overview
As a nickel alloy manufacturer and supplier in China, Arialloy supplies cost effective hastelloy N products.
Hastelloy N (UNS N10003) is a nickel based alloy containing approximately 16% molybdenum and 7% chromium. Molybdenum provides solid solution strengthening, while chromium contributes to oxidation resistance in air. The relatively modest chromium content also limits the amount of this reactive element available for selective dissolution in molten fluoride salts. This composition gives the alloy a distinctive balance of salt corrosion resistance, strength and fabricability. Its microstructure consists of a nickel rich matrix with carbide particles, whose distribution depends on composition and thermal history. Although conventional aging does not produce substantial hardening, heat treatment influences carbide precipitation and the resulting mechanical behavior.
The alloy can be forged, formed and welded, with gas tungsten arc welding providing an established joining method. Weld preparation requires removal of surface oxides and contaminants, together with effective shielding to protect the molten metal. Welding conditions affect the microstructure across the weld and adjacent material, so joint properties should be evaluated separately from those of the parent alloy.
Solution annealing after hot or cold working helps restore a suitable material condition, with the treatment temperature and cooling method selected according to product thickness.
Hastelloy N Corrosion Resistance
Hastelloy N offers strong resistance to molten fluoride salts under suitable chemical conditions. Tests extending beyond two years recorded corrosion rates below 0.0254 mm per year at temperatures up to 704°C (1300°F).
This performance depends on salt purity, redox potential and exposure conditions. Oxidizing impurities can promote selective chromium dissolution, while applied stress may accelerate grain boundary attack. Salt chemistry, temperature gradients and contact with other materials therefore require careful consideration when evaluating corrosion behavior over extended periods of exposure.
Hastelloy N Mechanical Properties
In the solution annealed condition, 1.6 mm sheet typically exhibits a room temperature tensile strength of 794 MPa (115,100 psi), a 0.2% offset yield strength of 314 MPa (45,500 psi), and elongation of 50.7%. This combination provides substantial strength with good ductility. Cold working further increases strength and hardness. Mechanical properties vary with product form, thermal history and welding condition.
Hastelloy N Temperature Characteristics
Hastelloy N shows good oxidation resistance in air, with potential for continuous exposure up to 982°C (1800°F) and intermittent exposure up to 1038°C (1900°F). These temperatures describe oxidation behavior and do not establish equivalent strength or corrosion limits in molten salts.
At elevated temperatures, creep resistance and rupture life depend on both applied stress and exposure duration. Thermal history also affects carbide precipitation and ductility, so temperature capability must be assessed together with the material condition and the surrounding environment.

You can submit an hastelloy n purchase request either by emailing sales@arialloy.com or by using the inquiry form at the bottom of the page. Our sales team will prepare a detailed quotation based on your requirements. Once you accept the offer, send your PO. We will issue the PI, and manufacturing will begin after the prepayment is received. We will notify you when the material is ready.
We maintain a typical 24 hour turnaround for hastelloy n quotations. If your inquiry requires clarification or falls outside what we can quote, our sales team will notify you without unnecessary delay.
Our standard FOB terms mean that hastelloy n transportation is usually arranged by a freight forwarder designated by the buyer. We will work with that forwarder to complete the necessary local operations. If you prefer a more hands-off solution, we can arrange the shipment and inquire about the applicable freight.
Because hastelloy n is made from several metallic elements, its price is naturally exposed to fluctuations in the raw material market. The prices of important metals such as nickel and molybdenum can significantly influence the final cost of the alloy.
Hastelloy N is melted under our own manufacturing control. Our factory has more than 30 vacuum smelting and electroslag remelting furnaces, covering capacities from 50 kg to 5,000 kg. The availability of multiple furnace sizes enables us to keep our minimum order requirements flexible.
Yes. We provide a pre shipment MTR for hastelloy n that documents conformity with the applicable material requirements. It includes standard identification, chemical analysis, mechanical properties, dimensions, and heat number.
The chemistry of hastelloy n is monitored during melting through strict control of material proportions and analytical testing. After the finished product is completed, PMI testing is performed, and an independent laboratory can conduct further chemical analysis if needed.
