Hastelloy C22 Material Properties Overview

As a manufacturer and supplier in China, Arialloy supplies cost effective hastelloy C-22 products.

Hastelloy C-22 (UNS N06022 / W.Nr. 2.4602) is an austenitic nickel alloy containing chromium, molybdenum and tungsten, combining broad corrosion resistance with good ductility and weldability. Its nominal composition includes approximately 22% chromium, 13% molybdenum and 3% tungsten, with nickel forming the balance. Chromium improves resistance to oxidizing chemicals, while molybdenum and tungsten contribute to protection against reducing media and localized attack. Low carbon and silicon contents help limit harmful precipitation during welding, supporting corrosion resistance around welded joints. The alloy derives its strength primarily from solid solution strengthening and can be further strengthened through cold working. Products are normally supplied in the solution annealed condition to provide a favorable balance of corrosion resistance and formability.

The alloy can be joined using gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc and shielded metal arc welding. Matching C-22 filler metals support corrosion resistance in the deposited weld metal. Appropriate welding procedures remain essential because weld chemistry and microstructure can influence performance, particularly where aggressive solutions attack the weld differently from the base metal.

Hastelloy C-22 Corrosion Resistance

Hastelloy C-22 offers strong resistance to general corrosion, chloride induced stress corrosion cracking, pitting and crevice attack. Its resistance to precipitation during welding helps preserve corrosion resistance in the heat affected zones of properly made joints.

The alloy resists many oxidizing and reducing solutions, including wet chlorine, ferric chloride, cupric chloride and mixed acids containing chlorides. It also performs well in many organic acids. Actual corrosion rates depend on temperature, acid concentration and impurities, so resistance should be assessed for the specific chemical conditions.

Hastelloy C22 Mechanical Properties

In the solution annealed condition, hastelloy C-22 combines tensile strength with substantial ductility. Published room temperature averages for sheet, plate and bar show tensile strengths of 765 to 800 MPa, 0.2% yield strengths of 359 to 407 MPa, and elongations of 57 to 70%. Cold working increases strength and hardness while reducing ductility.

These figures are typical test averages, not guaranteed minimum values. Acceptance requirements depend on the applicable product specification, dimensions and delivery condition.

Hastelloy C-22 Temperature Characteristics

Hastelloy C-22 exhibits decreasing tensile strength and elastic modulus as temperature rises, while retaining substantial ductility in elevated temperature tensile tests. Sustained exposure above approximately 677°C (1250°F) is generally avoided because detrimental phases can form and impair material properties.

Its melting range of approximately 1357 to 1399°C does not represent an allowable service range. Solution annealing is normally performed at approximately 1121°C (2050°F), followed by rapid cooling to restore the desired microstructure. Permissible operating temperatures depend on exposure duration, corrosive conditions and mechanical loading.
