Monel 401 Material Properties Overview

As a manufacturer and supplier in China, Arialloy offers competitively priced monel 401 products.

Monel 401 (UNS N04401) is a copper nickel alloy combining stable electrical resistance, good ductility, and resistance to a variety of corrosive conditions. Its composition contains 40.0 to 45.0% nickel, with copper forming the balance and limited amounts of manganese, iron, cobalt, carbon, silicon, and sulfur. The alloy has a very low temperature coefficient of electrical resistance, meaning its resistance changes relatively little with temperature over the relevant measurement range. This characteristic distinguishes monel 401 from alloys selected mainly for mechanical strength. Its copper content is higher than that of monel 400, making the specific composition important when evaluating electrical behavior and identifying the correct material for purchase. These electrical characteristics complement its ductility and fabrication flexibility.

Thin sections of monel 401 can be joined by gas tungsten arc welding without adding filler metal. Resistance welding is another suitable joining method, and the alloy also offers good brazing characteristics. Cold working increases strength and hardness, while annealing restores a softer condition. Heat treatment alone does not produce precipitation hardening.

Wire and strip are common product forms, with dimensions, surface finish, and delivery temper selected according to the required electrical and mechanical properties.

Monel 401 Corrosion Resistance

Monel 401 provides resistance to a variety of corrosive conditions through its copper nickel composition. Its corrosion performance must be evaluated for the actual environment, including solution chemistry, temperature, and exposure conditions.

Published alloy information describes general corrosion resistance but does not establish universal limits for acid concentration, chloride content, or operating temperature. Resistance to a particular medium should therefore be confirmed using data specific to monel 401. Performance values for monel 400 should not automatically be assigned to this alloy despite their shared constituents.

Monel 401 Mechanical Properties

In the annealed condition, monel 401 has typical tensile strength of approximately 441 MPa and 0.2% offset yield strength of 134 MPa, together with elongation of about 51%. This combination indicates good ductility and relatively easy forming. Cold working increases strength and hardness, with the final properties depending on the degree of deformation and subsequent annealing.

These figures are typical reference values, rather than guaranteed acceptance limits. Specified properties should match the product form and delivery condition.

Monel 401 Temperature Characteristics

Monel 401 exhibits a low temperature coefficient of electrical resistance, supporting limited resistance variation over a defined temperature interval. Its mean thermal expansion coefficient is approximately 13.7 µm/m·°C from 21 to 93°C, increasing to about 15.3 µm/m·°C from 21 to 260°C.

These values describe dimensional response to heating, rather than a maximum service temperature. Exposure to sufficiently high temperatures can soften cold worked material through recovery and recrystallization. Thermal performance therefore depends on the initial temper, exposure duration, actual temperature, applied stress, and surrounding atmosphere.

Please send your monel 401 specifications to sales@arialloy.com or use the inquiry form at the bottom of the page. We will provide a detailed quotation according to your requirements. After you confirm our offer, send us your PO and we will prepare the PI for payment. Production starts once the prepayment has been received, followed by notification when the material is finished.

Raw metal costs are one of the main factors behind monel 401 pricing. The prices of metals such as nickel, copper, and sulfur directly affect alloy production costs, meaning fluctuations in these metals can result in noticeable changes in the final alloy price.

Our sales team typically responds to monel 401 inquiries with a quotation within 24 hours. If your request lacks necessary information or falls outside what we can supply, we will notify you as soon as possible.

We do not rely on outside suppliers for the initial melting of monel 401. Our facility has more than 30 vacuum smelting and electroslag remelting furnaces, ranging from 50 kg to 5,000 kg. Because we can select equipment according to batch size, we are able to accommodate relatively small orders.

We supply material test reports for monel 401 before shipment, following relevant industry standards. The documentation records the material specification, chemistry, mechanical properties, dimensions, and heat number as evidence that the material meets requirements.

Our monel 401 pricing is generally based on FOB. Therefore, customers usually nominate their own forwarder for transportation, while our team cooperates with the forwarder to complete the local arrangements. For customers looking for a simpler process, we can also organize the shipment and obtain the corresponding transportation cost.

The monel 401 smelting process is closely monitored through controlled material ratios and chemical composition checks. Finished material is verified by PMI, and a third-party lab can perform final chemical analysis when additional assurance is required.
