Inconel 625 Material Properties Overview

As a manufacturer and supplier in China, Arialloy offers inconel 625 products in various dimensions and delivery conditions.

Inconel 625 (UNS N06625 / W.Nr. 2.4856) is an austenitic nickel alloy containing chromium, molybdenum and niobium. Its composition includes at least 58% nickel, 20% to 23% chromium, 8% to 10% molybdenum and 3.15% to 4.15% niobium plus tantalum. Molybdenum and niobium strengthen the nickel chromium matrix through solid solution effects, allowing substantial strength without a separate precipitation hardening treatment. Chromium supports resistance to oxidizing conditions, while molybdenum improves resistance to reducing media and localized corrosion. The high nickel content contributes to resistance against stress corrosion cracking caused by chlorides. This combination gives inconel 625 a useful balance of mechanical strength, corrosion resistance and fabrication capability.

The alloy can be formed by hot or cold working and joined using conventional welding processes. Its ductility supports bending and forming, although rapid work hardening can make intermediate annealing necessary. Annealed and solution annealed conditions provide different combinations of strength, ductility and creep resistance, so heat treatment should reflect the required material properties.

Inconel 625 Corrosion Resistance

Inconel 625 resists general corrosion, pitting, crevice attack and chloride induced stress corrosion cracking. Its nickel, chromium and molybdenum content supports corrosion resistance across both oxidizing and reducing environments.

The alloy performs well in seawater, neutral salts, alkaline solutions and many organic and mineral acids. Niobium helps limit sensitization during welding, supporting resistance to subsequent intergranular attack. Performance in aggressive acids and concentrated chlorides depends on temperature, concentration and metallurgical condition, particularly where elevated temperatures or crevices increase the likelihood of localized corrosion.

Inconel 625 Mechanical Properties

At room temperature, annealed inconel 625 rod, bar and plate typically exhibit tensile strengths of 827 to 1034 MPa, 0.2% yield strengths of 414 to 655 MPa and elongations of 30% to 60%. Cold working increases strength and hardness while reducing ductility.

These typical ranges describe specific product forms and conditions. Acceptance requirements should follow the applicable product specification, dimensions and heat treatment condition rather than treating these values as guaranteed limits for all products.

Inconel 625 Temperature Characteristics

Inconel 625 provides good oxidation resistance at temperatures up to approximately 982°C (1800°F), although this does not establish a universal limit for continuous service under load. Strength decreases at elevated temperatures, and prolonged thermal exposure can promote precipitation that reduces ductility and toughness.

Solution annealing generally improves creep and rupture resistance compared with conventional annealing. The appropriate temperature range therefore depends on material condition, exposure duration, stress and atmosphere. Thermal expansion increases with temperature, while elastic modulus decreases, affecting dimensional response and stiffness during heating.
