Monel K500 Material Properties Overview

Monel K500 (UNS N05500 / W.Nr. 2.4375) is a nickel copper alloy that combines corrosion resistance with increased strength and hardness through precipitation hardening. Aluminum and titanium additions enable fine strengthening particles to form within the matrix during aging. Unlike monel 400, which relies primarily on cold working for strengthening, monel K500 responds to both cold deformation and subsequent heat treatment. Its nickel copper base provides resistance to flowing seawater, alkaline solutions, and certain nonoxidizing acids. The alloy also has low magnetic permeability and retains good toughness at low temperatures. Final properties depend on product dimensions, prior processing, and aging conditions, allowing strength and ductility to be balanced through an appropriate manufacturing sequence.
Forming and machining are generally easier before aging, when the material has lower hardness and greater ductility. Welding is preferably performed in the annealed condition, followed by an appropriate aging treatment when required. Conventional nickel copper weld deposits do not acquire the same precipitation strengthening response, so weld strength requires separate consideration when selecting filler metals.
Typical applications include marine fasteners, pump shafts, valve components, springs, oil well instruments, and scrapers where corrosion resistance and mechanical strength are required.
Monel K-500 Corrosion Resistance
Monel K500 provides corrosion resistance broadly comparable to monel 400, including low corrosion rates in rapidly flowing seawater. Its nickel copper composition also resists many alkaline solutions and certain nonoxidizing acids under suitable conditions.
Stagnant seawater can encourage deposits and localized pitting. After age hardening, susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking increases in some environments. Corrosion performance therefore depends on solution chemistry, aeration, temperature, and material condition. Greater strength after aging should not be interpreted as a corresponding improvement in resistance to chemical attack.
Monel K500 Mechanical Properties
For hot finished rod and bar subsequently aged, typical tensile strengths range from 140,000 to 190,000 psi (965 to 1310 MPa), with 0.2% offset yield strengths of 100,000 to 150,000 psi (690 to 1034 MPa). Elongation typically ranges from 20% to 30%. Annealed material offers lower strength and greater forming ductility.
These ranges combine different product sizes and are indicative values, not guaranteed acceptance limits. Specified properties must correspond to the product form and heat treatment condition.
Monel K-500 Temperature Characteristics
Monel K500 retains substantial strength at moderately elevated temperatures, although hardness and load carrying capability change with temperature and exposure time. Published tests on hot finished, aged rod show Brinell hardness decreasing from 331 at 21°C to 293 at 482°C. Prolonged loading also requires consideration of creep and stress relaxation. At cryogenic temperatures, tensile and yield strengths increase while toughness and ductility remain largely preserved. No transition from ductile to brittle behavior is reported even near the temperature of liquid hydrogen, approximately minus 253°C

To place an order for monel k500, you can contact us at sales@arialloy.com with your requirements or submit the online form below. Our team will prepare a detailed quotation for you. After confirming the offer, please send your Purchase Order. We will provide a Proforma Invoice for payment, begin production after receiving the prepayment, and notify you when the material is completed.
Our dedicated sales team handles inquiries efficiently and normally sends the corresponding quotation within 24 hours. If your request is incomplete or cannot be quoted, we will contact you promptly.
Our usual monel k500 offers are based on FOB terms, so buyers generally appoint their preferred freight forwarder. Once appointed, we will cooperate with the forwarder to complete the necessary local procedures. Should you prefer us to handle the shipping, we can arrange it and confirm the additional freight cost.
Because alloys are made from several different metals, fluctuations in raw material prices can have a direct effect on alloy prices. Metals including nickel, copper, aluminum, and titanium are major contributors to superalloy costs, so changes in their market prices can cause corresponding changes in alloy pricing.
Our monel k500 raw material is produced through our own smelting operations. We operate over 30 vacuum smelting and electroslag remelting furnaces, with individual capacities ranging from 50 kg to 5,000 kg. Having equipment suited to different batch sizes is one reason we can work with smaller minimum orders.
We provide the required monel k500 test documentation before shipment in accordance with applicable industry standards. Key information includes the material standard, chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensions, and heat number, supporting product compliance.
Our monel k500 melting process includes strict control of material ratios and ongoing chemical analysis. Once the product is finished, we perform PMI testing and can arrange independent laboratory testing if further chemical verification is needed.
